Aoi Kotsuhiroi’s Feet Objects

Curated by Nick Knight with Carrie Scott at the SHOWstudio, the exhibition that I am blogging about today is called ‘Selling Sex’.

It is an exciting mix of fine artists, photographers, filmmakers, and fashion designers. Aoi Kotsuhiroi’s ‘WET SILENCE’ Kinbaku feet objects and ‘RELIQUARY #1’ are currently featured in this latest show.

Each object in this presentation is unique. The artist uses materials such as silk thread, human hair, horse hair, Urushi lacquer, lacquered horns, antique Buddhist carnelian prayer beads, antique roman 24k gold beads and glass beads from circa 100-400 AD, antique elephant leather, buffalo leather, crocodile leather, cherry tree wood, antique indigo fabric, phantom crystals, ‘pit-fired’ porcelain, etc. to create these incredible art pieces.

Young Hollywood Cares Collection by Stuart Weitzman

A little more than a month ago, Stuart Weitzman introduced his Young Hollywood Cares Collection with Olivia Palermo wearing her co-designed sandals from this collection at a red carpet event – The Smurfs World Premiere.

The other young celebrity co-designers for Stuart Weitzman’s collection are no less than Hayden Panettiere, Scarlett Johansson, and Michelle Trachtenberg. Stuart Weitzman teamed-up with these young celebs to raise money for ovarian cancer and assist Dr. Marsha Moses’ research in ovarian cancer at the Folkman Institute in Boston, MA.

The complete collection is available and all of sales will go to a very good cause.

Only High Heels Bulletin Board Is Up and Running!

I have been setting up my own high heels related bulletin board and forum in the last couple of weeks.

I have no intention to reinvent everything from scratch as there are very nice examples. There are several simple reasons behind creating this Only High Heels Forum.

The main idea behind this forum was to create a safe and friendly community to network with all like-minded fellow shoe enthusiasts and share our common passion online without physical boundaries. As you may or may not know, there are a plethora of websites and forums that “deal” with shoes and footwear, however, I have not found many that offer a clean and uncluttered basis for great communication and networking. Some are very limited in topics and have certain directions that do not necessarily include all enthusiasts, other are flooded with commercial pop-ups,
broken links, or unwanted and irrelevant content.

My goal is to keep this bulletin board as simple as possible in terms of communication and content and as multifaceted and comprehensive as possible to cover almost all interests. With the help of all of our members, we would like to create one of the most comprehensive and user-friendly networking forum about shoes, high heels, and fetish.

Yes, I’ve also included a fetish section as I believe that they are closely related to the main topic of the board and most of the members have light or strong fetishes that they’d like to share. In the bulletin board, as a user-driven concept, the members decide about the content. Thus enabling the forum to be an evolving, progressing, and ever-changing platform to share our interests and grow together.

This site is aimed to be a stage for consensual communication and networking in a friendly atmosphere. Guests and members of the Only High Heels Bulletin Board will be a part of a pleasant networking foundation for fellow shoe lovers and will have an excellent opportunity for sharing their ideas, information, thoughts, media, news, and much more.

Our main goal is to have a community that supports itself and to have a safe place for all of us to network, communicate, share and enjoy all these activities without any interference in terms of pesky ads, irritating pop-ups, annoying flash-based commercials, and links to nowhere.

I would like the Only High Heels Bulletin Board to grow together with all its members and provide them with the utmost online enjoyment and therefore kindly ask all of members to respect
other members and keep the forum clean and post accordingly.

In the beginning, there will be some quirks and twists as with any new attempt and technical issues may also arise. But I am very confident that the positive approach of all members will assist me to keep on solving all the issues and perfecting the experience together with all of you.

Les Promises De L’hiver (The promises of Winter)

Christian Louboutin’s Fall 2011 Lookbook is a collaboration with photographer Peter Lippmann.

It contains seven images juxtaposing Christian Louboutin shoes from his Fall/Winter 2011 collection into iconic portraits from the past centuries.

While paying homage to these masterpieces, Louboutin also implies that his creations are nothing short of works of a genius.

If you are looking for a pair of nude patent leather platform wedges for the spring/summer, you can’t go wrong with ‘Une Plume’ leather platform wedges by Christian Louboutin.

These sandals are 100% leather and feature 5.3-inch cork wedge heels with 1.3-inch platforms.

For $590, you’d get almond-shaped peep-toes, adjustable ankle straps with buckles, leather insoles, and signature red lacquered hard outer soles.

Machete – Deadly Stilettos

When I watched Machete the other day, I was amazed how well Jessica Alba walked and moved in her 5-inch stilettos as the persistent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Sartana Rivera.

I especially liked the fight scene between Jessica Alba and an intruder, where she uses her 5-inch stiletto heeled red patent leather pumps (by the way, they were The Highest Heel brand) as weapons against a much larger guy with a knife. The fight was well coordinated and the scene ends in a bloody way, as you’d expect from an exploitation style movie by Robert Rodriguez, when Agent Rivera hits the “bad guy” in the eye with one of her sharp metal stiletto heels and kills him.

How To Clean, Condition and Shine Your Boots

2010-11 winter has been a very snowy one thus far. New York City typically gets 21 inches of snow a winter. Alone in January 2011, we have seen 36 inches of snow making it the snowiest January since the city started keeping records. Adding this to the 20-inch blizzard in late December and all other snowy days, we have seen over 65 inches of snow in total so far. A meteorologist with the National Weather Service noted that this was already the sixth-snowiest winter on record – the snowiest was 1995-96 (75.6 inches) – and we have all of February and all of March to look forward to more snow.

I love snow in its powdery form. When it starts melting and turns into a nasty and slushy brew, there is not much fun about it.

When snow melts in the city, it becomes a horrible blend of water; rock salt; calcium chloride (this is another type of salt found in deicer products with the ability to absorb a great deal of liquid and therefore works much more efficiently than rock salt when it comes to clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, streets, and roadways); dissolved oil, grease, and heavy metals (roadways and motor vehicles are considered to be one of the largest sources of heavy metals. Zinc, copper, and lead are three of the most common heavy metals released from road travel. On the road surface, most heavy metals become bound to the surfaces of road dust and during precipitation, the bound metals will either become soluble [dissolved] or be swept off the roadway with the water/snow/ice); dirt; all other possible impurities found on the city roads and sidewalks.

If these materials are left on your footwear for extended periods of time, they will damage your shoes and boots permanently.

When I watch fellow New Yorkers to see how they navigate the sidewalk slush and slush puddles the size their studio apartments, I see many different techniques that are more or less efficient. But one thing is for sure: You’re not going anywhere in the city with dry shoes or boots as there are so many invisible puddles everywhere! You may think that it’s just going to be an inch or two, and it goes all the way up to your knees. There are no snow boots that can save you from such deep ponds – not even your designer over-the-knee boots!

All salts will cause damage to leather and suede footwear through their corrosive properties if left untreated. The leather, suede, and shearling (as found in most UGGs boots) surfaces will be damaged, shrink, crack, and become hard to the touch.

The easiest way to protect your leather footwear from permanent damage is to clean any items that have salt on them as soon as possible and condition them to replenish the softness of the leather. I am not even getting into suede or shearling as they should not be worn in slush anyways even though I see way too many UGG-whores trying to walk in the slushy streets with their UGGs soaked up to their ankles looking like wet loaves of bread!

Each day, when I come home, huf is tasked with cleaning, conditioning, and polishing of my leather boots. They look great (and sometimes better than when they were new) after an hour or so of TLC and are ready for me. I always wear a different pair of boots each day and never wear the same pair on two consecutive days as to preserve the leather and let them breathe.

I asked huf to take pictures when he was cleaning my Elie Tahari leather knee-high boots so that I can prepare a tutorial on how he cleans, conditions, and polishes my boots and also share with you, which products he uses. Below is the step-by-step tutorial on how to clean off the salt from your boots and make them shine like the very first day you wore them.

With the winter of 2011 becoming one the snowiest in decades, it would be a good idea to clean your leather footwear to avoid permanent and costly damage.

1- This is how my beloved Elie Tahari leather boots look after one day wear in NYC. In this picture, the boots are still wet and are covered with salt etc.

2- This is how my boots look after they are dry. I did not even walk more than a couple of blocks in them and you see how bad they look.

Products you need to clean, condition and polish

3- These are all you need to clean, condition and polish your leather boots.

KIWI saddle soap

4- First, you must remove all the salt residue and dirt using a wet cloth and let the boots dry. Then you apply KIWI saddle soap with a moist cloth. You should first develop lather and then rub this well into the leather. Repeat procedure until you clean the surface. Then let the leather dry and buff with a soft cloth.

Fiebling's Distressed Leather Conditioner

5- Once you finish the saddle soap application and the boots are dry, then you can apply the leather conditioner. huf uses Fiebling’s Distressed Leather Conditioner. It removes deep scuff marks and restores original boot texture while softening the leather. Rub conditioner well into the leather using a soft cloth. Allow to stand on leather minimum 10 minutes. then buff boots with a soft bristle horsehair brush. Apply the conditioner to the whole boot at one time.

Tarrago Professional Shoe Cream

6- Once the boots are cleaned and conditioned, you can use a professional shoe cream (huf uses Tarrago Professional Self Shine Shoe Cream). This brand is good as it has natural waxes that nourishes the leather surface while giving a deep shine. Allow to dry. Then brush softly with a horsehair brush.

Angelus brand acrylic sole & heel enamel

7- The next step is the application of an acrylic sole and heel enamel. huf uses Angelus brand for this purpose. Use a Q-tip to apply the enamel to the soles and heels and let it dry to a rich gloss. This enamel will make your heels and soles water resistant.

Horsehair brush

8- The last step is to brush the whole boot with a soft horsehair brush to a high gloss. You should take your time (huf is taking 10-15 minutes per boot) and make sure that you treat the entire surface of the boot.

My boots look as good as new – for now! All this work and they will look like the first picture after only one day in NYC slush!

I don’t mind since it’s huf’s job to take care of my shoes and boots. And he will start working on them as soon as I take them off

Beat Meat with Your High Heels

You can use a traditional meat mallet to pound meat, but if you don’t have one and you need a substitute, then you can follow my lead.

I have hundreds of shoes and of course some older ones, which I don’t wear but which I also did not want to give away or donate.

When we bought a nice rack of lamb chops (“pirzola” in Turkish by the way) from a specialty store over the weekend, we needed a meat mallet to flatten the thick lamb chop pieces. That’s how I came up with the idea to use my “old faithful” sandals and their chunky heels to pound and flatten the lamb chops. I had a pair of gorgeous Nine West leather sandals. I loved them so much back in the days that I just kept them although I did not wear them anymore. They were not as high as my most other shoes and the heels are not stiletto heels but rather chunky. When you look at them, you’d see that they have the perfect shape and size heels for beating the lamb chops. The heels are chunky and sturdy enough to pound meat – and bones!

Although I was a little skeptical in the beginning about how effective they would be, I also knew how destructive heels can be for flesh! Once I started pounding on the lamb chops, it was obvious that the meat was no match for the sturdy heels of my sandals.

I quickly flattened the lamb meat to the desired thickness with very little effort. I had to be careful though that I did not rip the meat with the sharp edges of the heels.

As you can easily see, the meat was less than half its former size after just a couple of hits. I even broke the tip of the bones when I hit a little too close to the bone.

The end result was very pleasing with an easily visible result.

After I was finished, I let huf clean up the heels and hang them up next to our other kitchen utensils.

By the way, the grilled pirzolas were delicious!

These gorgeous Stella McCartney over-the-knee [OTK] boots have been around for almost 2 years now.

First, everybody saw Rihanna wearing them. Then came Sharon Stone’s sexy pictures in Paris Match magazine with the same stiletto heeled fierce boots.

Lately, people started talking about these lovely boots because of Madonna. She wore those babies at the 5th Annual Fashion Delivers Gala held at Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NYC.

Anastasia Radevich is one of the very talented designers in my opinion. She is a Canadian footwear designer of Belarusian origin.

Her designs are very elegant, beautiful, and sophisticated. There is something timeless in her creations.

Most of the shoes she designed can be placed on a podium and displayed as sculptures.

High-Heeled Foot Cast from the Movie Inglorious Basterds

I’ve just watched Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds on Bluray. It was a very nice movie, although a little long to my liking (It could have been 30 mins shorter).

Anyway, the movie is about a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as “The Basterds” lead by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), who are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis in Nazi-occupied France during World War II. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris.

Toward the end of the movie, there is a scene where Bridget von Hammersmark, a double agent played by Diane Kruger, has to attend an illustrious movie premiere at the above-mentioned theater -despite being shot at her leg just a day ago- because every major Nazi officer attends the event, including Hitler.

It was very interesting to see that she was wearing a nice gray metallic ankle-strap platform sandal on her healthy foot with at least 4.5 to 5 inches of heel and to match that, she had the first “high-heeled foot cast” I have ever seen on her injured foot. I had to blog about this because I have never seen such a cast before in any movies or real life!

Another first for the ever-inventive Tarantino, who also have a known fetish for female feet.

Christina’s shoe closet/shoe room looks very nice and organized and her collection looks almost as extensive as Mariah Carey’s, almost! Although I do not like the red curtain and leopard carpeting, the shelving is very nicely done.

I wonder how she keeps track of which shoes she already has. Does she have a list that gets updated? Does she keep the shoes and boots forever or she gives them away/throws them away once she is done with them (I guess she can wear them only on a couple of occasions while everybody is watching what she wears all the time!).

I also wonder, if she only buys one pair of each or several pairs, because I remember reading that Celine Dion was buying several pairs of the same shoe model so that she has the same shoes in all her houses.

I believe I have more shoes and boots in total than she has but nowhere near the same collection of brand names.

The Highest Heels Rely on Technology to Reach the Sky

The pale gold carpet in Bergdorf Goodman’s shoe salon was pockmarked with hundreds of small indentations one recent Thursday afternoon.

Christian Louboutin, the French shoe designer, was in town and about 200 of his faithful clients had come to pay homage — most of them in the designer’s skyscraper stilettos, which not only soar to more than $3,000 but have heels that top out at 160 millimeters, or a little more than 6 inches.

“I go to work in them. I go out at night in them,” said Angela Russo, 30, a Manhattan attorney who was wearing Louboutin black suede platform sandals. “I think they’re amazing, incredibly sexy and they’re comfortable. The construction is impeccable.”

Over the past decade, technical advances in materials and fabrication, combined with designers’ skills and desire to innovate, have pushed many dress shoe heels beyond the traditional 70 millimeter to 90 millimeter range in recent years. But as anyone who has broken a heel knows, the higher the elevation, the more likely it is to snap.

“The technical must-haves for designing a stiletto are a strong heel to sustain the weight of the wearer and a reinforced shank — the instep, which is the curved part of the sole — so the shoe won’t collapse,” said Elizabeth Semmelback, curator of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto.

Many give the credit for that stronger heel to ABS, or Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, a polymer developed by a U.S. government team working on synthetic rubber after World War II.

“The most important innovation in high heels is the ABS molded high heel,” said Nicholas Kirkwood, 29, a shoe designer who won the British Fashion Awards emerging star prize last year. “It’s what allows them to be really high and come in multifaceted shapes.”

It is the material used by many designers, including Mr. Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik, a pioneer in the contemporary shoe designer pantheon, although Mr. Blahnik draws the line at 115-millimeter heels. “115 is the highest heel to walk properly and comfortably,” the British-based designer said. “You have grace and femininity.”

Mr. Blahnik’s heels, which he likes to describe as “spindly,” have a central steel rod surrounded by ABS plastic and a polyurethane tip at the bottom. And to attach them firmly to the shoe, artisans in his factories position five nails, each one at a 7-degree angle and about 8 millimeters apart, a configuration that looks something like a martini glass.

A compressed-air gun is used to hammer the nails into place and, as a finishing touch, a screw is driven through the insole and into the heel, a sort of metaphorical olive.

The insoles most commonly used for Italian-made high heels are produced by Texon, a 60-year-old company, which makes a cellulose base from cotton fibers, for moisture absorption. Several other materials then are glued on it to form a kind of sandwich, with the area under the toes and ball of the foot designed to be soft and flexible while the arch and heel are made for strength. Part of that design is a stiff strip called the shankboard, which creates the arch, and a pair of spaghetti-thin steel rods that run from the heel to the ball of the foot, to help maintain the architecture of the shoe.

The front of the insole has an added layer of Latex foam for comfort.

Mr. Blahnik also adds a layer of felt, for extra cushioning, inside his shoes — “to make sure you avoid the ‘Princess and the Pea’ effect,” said George Malkemus, the president of Manolo Blahnik. “The cushioning is higher at the heel so you don’t feel the nail heads and gets thinner towards the front of the shoe because you need room for the toes.”

When it comes to the design, Mr. Blahnik said, “balance is the most important aspect of creating a 115-millimeter heel. To achieve it, I use a compass, a ruler, my eyes and my hands.” Some designers now use a CAD, or computer-assisted design, system in their work but Mr. Blahnik said he would rather do everything himself — “I am a traditionalist,” he said.

And the goal is achieved when the toe of the shoe and the tip of the heel strike the ground at the same time, with the weight evenly balanced over the shoe.

Mr. Louboutin also has hidden a microplastic platform under the ball of the foot, to give a bit of bounce and “to make the woman look good with a maximum of comfort for that type of height.”

“You measure from the top of the heel to the top of the platform inside the sole and that’s the height of the heel that you’re really walking on,” the designer said. So while his heels may look particularly high, “at the end of the day, it’s the same as a plain pump with a single sole.”

While fetish drawings from the late 19th century show very thin high heels, it wasn’t until the post-World War II era that the technological advances leading to today’s stiletto first became common.

“Stiletto,” a history of the shoe by Caroline Cox, a visiting professor in cultural history at the University of Arts in London, notes that Roger Vivier, working for Christian Dior, created the classic silhouette in 1952 — but his heels were wood. “With wood heels, you can’t go high without them breaking,” Professor Cox said in an interview.

By 1954, Mehmet Kurdash, a shoemaker with a small business in London’s East End, “figured that, if you put in an aluminum stem, you can go high without the heels breaking,” she said.

Mr. Vivier then devised the “talon aiguille,” or “needle heel,” which was reinforced with steel. And by 1956, designers at an Italian trade fair presented the basic composition used today: a central metal stem enclosed in a plastic shell.

Today, “It’s about balance, shapes and proportions,” said Mr. Kirkwood. “It has to fit the foot and different feet. It’s not just an objet d’art.”

Terrible News for SS 2010 Shoe Season

Following the excellent and pleasing designs of the summer 2009 with a myriad of gorgeous strappy sandals, peep-toes and summer booties, we were amazed by the beautiful peep-toe booties of the fall season, which were followed by the exceptional over-the-knee boots of winter season.

Great designs by almost all top designers, gorgeous material combinations, sleek silhouettes, the wonderful display of craftsmanship, and the breathtakingly innovative stiletto heels made us feel like we were in a wonderful dream and we never wanted to wake up.

Until the moment of the rude awakening came! I was happily browsing the Internet to see what’s new and upcoming when I got hit with the truth: I saw the Louis Vuitton SS 2010 shoe designs. My God! Then came the second hit from Chanel. Then came the third hit from Alexander McQueen, one of my favorite shoe designers. I was trying to stay positive and optimistic, however, they kept coming: Dior, Miu Miu, John Galliano and Nina Ricci!

One after the other they hit me in my face with their hideous shoe designs for SS 2010, reminding me that I was not in my joyful dream anymore. The creepy designs, the weird material combinations, the disturbing colors, and their unsettling presentation made me feel uneasy. (Check them below for yourself)

Now there is one thing that we can do: We should hope that none of these strange designs go to production and see the daylight again and that they stay on the runways as means of attracting the crowds’ attention.

I am also hoping that the other top designers, who still possess a ‘design sense’, will choose to continue the current elegant styles and create beautiful shoes and boots again for the SS 2010 and beyond, which are worthy to be worn and which make us feel good and happy again while wearing them and while watching others wear them.

5- Try to make sure that the shoes are made of breathable materials to avoid excessive perspiration.
